Abstract:
Years as a saloon owner, miner, and rancher had taught Keith Gordon to appreciate courage and quick gun play when he saw it. Almost as soon as the gray-eyed stranger, Walt Slade, had driven off the drygulchers who had killed the sheriff of Cienaga Valley, Gordon strode forward to offer Slade a job on his ranch. Slade jumped at the opportunity for two reasons. As an Arizona Ranger it was his business to track down the well-organized gang responsible for the sheriff's death -- and for many other murders, all committed with shotguns. Even more important, perhaps, as a member of Gordon's outfit, Slade could better get at the bottom of the sabotage of the railroad into which all the ranchers of the valley had put their savings -- and their futures. It was not difficult to trace railroad sabotage to the shotgun riders, but the mystery Walt Slade faced was why the road was being built over the Black Quag, which, according to legend, swallowed everything. Slade's miraculous escapes from the aroused gang and his eventual capture by them led him finally to the mystery of the railroad and the Black Quag, the secret of which had turned men into murderers.
